Intrinsic Factor, Human, Recombinant
Intrinsic Factor is synthesized by the parietal cells of the stomach and is a glycoprotein of approximately 15% carbohydrate. It is composed of two identical subunits, each with one vitamin B12 binding site. Intrinsic Factor is one of four important secretions of the gastric mucosa, along with hydrochloric acid, pepsin, and mucus. It is required for the absorption of vitamin B12 in the ileum. Vitamin B12 deficiency leads to pernicious anemia which is caused by malabsorption due to defective transport systems, parasitic infections, or surgical removal of the stomach.
Intrinsic Factor is useful in the development of assays to determine serum vitamin B12 levels. It is most effective when used in a highly purified state, to minimize the effects of R proteins, which bind non-specifically to vitamin B12.
