C-Reactive Protein

C-Reactive protein (CRP) is well-known as a biomarker of inflammation, but it is also a useful marker of cardiovascular disease. The accumulation of cholesterol inside blood vessel walls (atherosclerosis) is associated with inflammation and, as such, elevated levels of CRP may be indicative of cardiovascular disease in both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals. The association is strong enough that CRP is independently predictive of future cardiovascular events, regardless of the status of other risk factors like cholesterol levels.
